Car Song
03:08
|

I pull the car over it shutters and stops, I tell you to get out you tell me to fuck off
Put the car in reverse, twenty miles down the road they'll sell us all the gas that your stomach can hold
I sent you a message to stop the recording the mics are exploding you'll ruin your hearing
The shops are closed down and the doorways are hollow you reah to recover the light that I've swallowed
And I've never walked through the desert but I imagine that it's impossible
And I haven't yet gotten over you but I imagine that its not the end of the world if I don't
You went to Seattle before I could stop you, the birds will be buried I hope that they dropped you
Its cold in Virginia but wait till tomorrow a million red hornets will drown in your sorrow
It's frustrating yeah and it's a miracle we haven't got down on our knees, started begging for peace
I pull the car over it stops and recedes from the place you have marked with the back of your knees
The Chevy broke down halfway through Mexico and the truckers won't take us where we need to go
I've never walked through the desert but I imagine that it's impossible
And I don't know when I'll stop loving you, maybe I never will

Cadillac

Dollar up in the back of your grandpa's Cadillac
Straighten up watch the peaks of our breath fall individually
It's been so long since we've gone for a ride I've forgotten how to act, I've forgotten how to act
On November 17th back in 1963 we left class with our coats and our hats
The brown leaves were deep on 113th St. but we didn't care about that
And as Kruschev drove by, just a man in a trench coat
We clapped or hands and waved little American flags
Take me back to the past between blue and the black, take me back to your grandpa's Cadillac
Just a kid, just a hack from alongside the tracks
Takes a breath, takes a step, takes the train out of Ypsilanti and
It's been so long since he's been on his own he's forgotten how to act, he's forgotten how to act
And the train pulls away and it moves through the country we clap our hands and wave little American flags
Take me back to the past between blue and the black take me back to your grandpa's Cadillac

Spencer

Hey Spencer I got your letter
It sounds like you're a man at war
You liked the climb you'll like the fall even better
It sounds like you've seen this before
I try to bring to mind the times that I've stood bravely in good company
And Spencer I don't ever want to see you cry although she's brought you to your knees
Remember what you looked like last time when the earth left the sky
The land's flat again, and all the people you knew are back again
The earth hits the sea again and all the continents fit together again
You knew the train was coming but you sat down anyway
I wish that you could see your face
A close approximation for the Great Salt Lake
We'll melt you down, we'll fill the basin
Remember what you looked like last time pinned up against the sky
The land's flat again, and all the people you knew are back again
The earth hits the sea again and all the continents fit together again
There's no love in Utah
So don't go looking

El Centro
02:55
|

When it rains in El Centro the water is flowing like wine
The trees by the stream well I don't know their names but they're starting to open their eyes
When it's spring in El Centro the desert comes out like a dream
The salt water flats where the mountains have crossed them are coming apart at the seams
And I know you spend most of your time on the coast but next time you get leave why not start heading east and drive straight through the center of me
Things are great in El Centro you don't know how lucky you are
The truck that I bought down at Hennesy's lot hasn't moved since I parked it last year and I wish you were here
Because I have felt lost too and I've felt defeated, I've felt deserted and I have felt needed
I said I loved you but I didn't mean it
I said I loved you but I didn't mean it
And I know you spend most of your time on the coast but next time you get leave why not start heading east and drive straight through the center of me
Take it straight through the center of me

No Other Man
03:16
|
|||
Been alone for a couple of months at the start of the year, didn't suit me like it should
I've tried stairs chairs cigarettes magazines stars and radio studio city scenes
Nothing seems to do me any good
Take you down to a room at the floor in the back of the house, back you up against the wall
Don't slow it down in the time before we fall, we got time before we fall, we got time before we fall
I don't want to be loved by no other man
I don't want to be loved by no other man who just won't understand
I need you to be close to the place where the pain's gonna come, keep me up and on my feet
There's a sound here that's erasing my memory, strange to think that it comes from inside of me
Breaks the bones of everyone I meet
It's a shame that it's over before we had something to show for it, and you swear that it ain't true
But it's so clear to me when you tell me like you do that you love me like you do, you're so helpless when you do
I don't want to be loved by no other man
I don't want to be loved by no other man who just won't understand
